[it happened so fast...]
[One minute, standing by the road with her, the next, over. She smiled over at me, I smiled back, and then there’s nothing. A crash. A scream. Her scream. Screaming for me, but I could do nothing. Just stood there, and watched. She stepped out; I reached for her. Called her name, tried so hard to stop her. But she seemed to turn. Like in the films, hair flicking out behind her. She stepped off the pavement, blue eyes still like diamonds. Then a crash. Her scream. Blood, everywhere. People, people shouting, calling her name. Aiden, they screech. And I’m stood there, like a spare part. An un-necessary part of a car that runs smoothly. But her, she’s like the engine that drives them. And she lay there, motionless. Paramedics, they crowd around, asking what happened. To me, they turn. What’s your name lad, they asked. I stared straight through them, down at her still form. My mouth opened and shut, but nothing came out. They turn back to her. Aiden, I murmured softly, bent down and stroking her matted hair. Is that her name son, they asked, couldn’t leave me alone. I wanted to hold her, tell her it was okay. But it wasn’t. All these questions they asked, but I could say nothing. My voice had gone, gone with Aiden. The moment that car hit her; I died with her. She was my everything; she had taken my heart with her this time. Then she moaned so softly only I could hear, but my voice suddenly came back and I screamed so loud I could have woken the dead. The paramedics, this time they took notice of me and rushed over. They bent over Aiden, but then stopped. Why have you stopped, I shrieked, desperate for her to come back. She can’t be dead, can’t be… It was just a few minutes; she can’t have gone! My voice, I heard it crack and the tears came flooding down. You her boyfriend, mate one them asked, rubbing my shoulder sympathetically. I gave her a look of terror, glancing down at her, still dead on the floor. I shook my head wordlessly. Her sister, I croaked finally. I need, need to tell her girlfriend. Then my brain shut down. Aiden had gone for good this time, taken me wherever she was going. My head spun, stopped breathing, and forgot how to talk English. I murmured under my breath, but no one was listening. The girl walked up to me, a look of determination on her face. She stopped, about to speak but then she saw Aiden. Aiden. That was the only word on her lips, the only thing she could say. How, she whispered to Aiden. She turned to me, turned and I saw the tears falling like a waterfall down her beautiful face. I saw how Aiden could have loved this girl, could have risked everything for her. But I couldn’t reply, I was flying about the earth with my baby sister. Her face was twisted with grief, but I saw parts of Aiden in there, the way she smiled was just as Aiden did. She shook me, hoping I would say something, anything; that it was okay and it was really Aiden laying there. But still I could say nothing, couldn’t breath because I was so lost, so lost in the minutes before. Replaying it, over and over in my mind. Wishing it had been me who stepped out, not her. Remembering how her dark blonde hair had flicked back and she still had the cheeky look in her eyes even as the car came up, even as she fell to the ground. ]
